CASH PRIZES: Apply for the UNCCD photo competition 2025 for young changemakers
Photographers and storytellers have a unique opportunity to make a global impact through the 2025 United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Photo Competition. In partnership with the Global Water Partnership (GWP), this initiative seeks to highlight the critical issue of water scarcity and its role in land degradation. As droughts become more frequent and severe, the competition aims to showcase innovative solutions that help communities and ecosystems adapt to these challenges.
This is more than a contest—it’s a call to action. The UNCCD has long been at the forefront of efforts to combat desertification, while GWP works to promote sustainable water management. By bringing together photography and environmental advocacy, they hope to inspire meaningful conversations about resilience, conservation, and the future of our planet.
The competition welcomes submissions that explore different aspects of drought and land restoration. Participants can capture advancements in technology, such as smart irrigation systems and drought-monitoring tools. Others may choose to document the power of governance, illustrating how policies and community-driven initiatives strengthen water and land management. There is also space to highlight the role of women in addressing these challenges, showcasing gender-inclusive approaches that foster sustainable solutions. Nature itself offers incredible stories, and photographers can share images of ecosystem restoration, agroforestry, and other natural methods that mitigate the effects of drought.
Every image tells a story, and ethical considerations are key. Photographers must ensure that their work respects the dignity and privacy of individuals, particularly when depicting vulnerable communities. Consent and proper permissions must be secured before submitting any photograph. Each entry must include a brief explanation providing context, location, and insight into the solution being portrayed. While slight adjustments to lighting and color are allowed, overly edited or AI-generated images will not be accepted.
Recognition through this competition extends beyond winning. Semi-finalists will have their photographs featured in an online exhibition, gaining visibility among a global audience. Finalists will see their work displayed at UNCCD Headquarters in Bonn, Germany, as part of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on June 17, 2025. The top winners in each category will receive a $500 gift card from either the International Center of Photography or the Fotografiska Museum.
This is a chance to use photography as a tool for change, raising awareness about one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. A single image has the power to shift perspectives and drive action. For those passionate about visual storytelling and environmental advocacy, this is an opportunity to make a difference.
