The 2025 RELX Environmental Challenge is now accepting applications. This global initiative is a merit-based competition that invites participants to present forward-thinking solutions aimed at improving access to clean water and adequate sanitation in regions where these essentials are under threat.

Every year, the Challenge honors outstanding projects that show strong potential to deliver lasting access to safe water or sanitation. Participants are expected to propose concepts that not only offer practical and effective results but also bring about sustainable improvements in underserved communities.

The top proposal will receive a financial award of $50,000, while the runner-up will be granted $25,000. In addition to the monetary prizes, both winners will be granted complimentary one-year access to ScienceDirect—a leading resource in scientific and technical research—with full-text access to nearly 250,000 environmental science articles published since the year 2000.

Eligibility is open to individuals and organizations across both nonprofit and commercial sectors. Proposed initiatives should be capable of being scaled and reproduced in various settings, and they should showcase originality and real-world effectiveness. Projects must be grounded in community participation, prioritize inclusive access, engage multiple stakeholders, and serve as models of equity and sustainability in water or sanitation efforts.
