The award, initiated by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests in 2012, honors the legacy of Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai. Eligible candidates, nominated by a third party, can include individuals, whether living or recently deceased, with notable achievements in enhancing forests and the well-being of forest-dependent communities. Noteworthy professional and research contributions are considered if conducted beyond work-related responsibilities. Family members or business partners cannot submit applications. The selected awardee will receive a $20,000 cash prize and travel support to participate in a distinguished international forest event, offering a platform to showcase their work and expand their network.
