Applications are open for the role of an International Environmental Protection Expert at the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

An organisation under the UN that promotes industrial development for inclusive globalisation, poverty alleviation, and environmental sustainability is the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). In line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), its goal is to expedite inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States. Creating shared prosperity, boosting economic competitiveness, protecting the environment, and bolstering institutions and knowledge are the programmatic focuses of UNIDO.

Technical collaboration, analytical and research functions, normative functions, and knowledge transmission are the four enabling roles of UNIDO. The organization's development of capacities for industrial development, policy advice, statistics, research activities, and support to the SDGs is managed by the Directorate of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development. Under the Montreal Protocol Unit, the Division for Protocol Development and Implementation is in charge of organising, creating, and carrying out programmes in Member States to support adherence to the Kigali Amendment and the Montreal Protocol. Through the Unit's services, manufacturing technologies are transformed, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainable development.

Parties to the Montreal Protocol ratified Decision XXVIII/2 on the Kigali Amendment, which calls for the phase-down of HFCs. Decision 79/46 was accepted by the Executive Committee, enabling the A5 nations to carry out enabling measures to help national ozone units complete their initial duties under the Kigali Amendment. The A5 countries are collaborating with UNIDO, the Leading Agency in eighty percent of the subject countries, to draft the HFC phase-down management plan (KIP). Funding for Stage I of the KIP, which aims to reduce HFC consumption by 10% of the nation's baseline, was approved at the 93rd meeting of the Executive Committee. The first stage is to increase awareness of energy-efficient RAC systems and equipment, low-GWP alternatives, and energy efficiency among important national stakeholders.

The International Environmental Protection Expert has a 50-day contract that is open to non-staff candidates in Mexico City. Applications must be submitted by March 20, 2024.
