Applications are open for The Africa Fellowship for Young Energy Leaders (AFYEL) 2024 an initiative dedicated to nurturing the next generation of professionals who will champion sustainable energy access across the continent and help drive Africa toward a net-zero future.
About the Program
AFYEL is designed to train aspiring and early-career energy professionals—including renewable energy managers, engineers, researchers, and entrepreneurs—in essential aspects of clean energy generation. The fellowship is particularly tailored for graduates, postgraduates, and doctoral candidates in fields such as Physics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building and Construction Engineering, and Solar Energy.
The central aim of the fellowship is to build a skilled workforce capable of advancing renewable energy access for the over 600 million Africans currently living without electricity, while also fostering entrepreneurship and retaining talent in one of the continent’s most critical sectors.
Learning Tracks
Fellows begin with a general module on renewable energy technologies and later select a specialization in one of the following areas:

Hydropower

Solar Photovoltaics (PV)

Onshore Wind Energy
Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed based on:

Demonstrated leadership and achievements in relevant sectors.

Commitment to clean energy, public service, or community engagement.

Ability to collaborate in diverse teams and respect different perspectives.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

A motivated, positive mindset.

Knowledge, interest, or professional experience in renewable energy, economics, finance, or engineering.

Applicants must:
Be aged 21–35 by the application deadline.
Hold at least a bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, or related fields), Solar Energy, Economics, Finance, Accounting, or Mathematics.
Demonstrate proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
Be a citizen of any African country, including but not limited to Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and others across the continent.
