Faraja Africa Foundation: Strengthening Youth-Led CBOs in Uganda
Faraja Africa Foundation has launched a transformative initiative aimed at empowering youth-led Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) in Uganda. This program seeks to build the capacity of 20 diverse CBOs to enhance their advocacy efforts, strengthen their governance roles, and contribute meaningfully to legislative processes in Uganda by 2025. As part of the Youth-Led Advocacy in Legislation Project, this initiative is designed to amplify young voices in governance while advancing youth-centred policies.
Youth participation in governance is not only a crucial aspect of sustainable development but also a fundamental human right. This principle is upheld by key international frameworks such as Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 13 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Faraja Africa Foundation’s initiative aims to uphold these rights by ensuring that young people, particularly those from marginalised communities, have the skills and platforms to actively engage in shaping policies that affect their lives.
The program’s overarching goal is to identify and support 20 youth-led CBOs, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to drive impactful change. Participating organisations will gain expertise in strategic planning, resource mobilisation, compliance, and the establishment of sustainable social enterprises. These skills are essential for creating long-term, self-sufficient organisations capable of influencing policy at local, national, and regional levels.
In addition to capacity building, the program will empower CBOs to become active stakeholders in legislative processes, advocating for human rights, equality, and accountability. By integrating a rights-based approach into their advocacy efforts, these organisations will be better positioned to push for policies that reflect the aspirations and needs of Uganda’s youth.
Priority for this initiative will be given to organisations working with underserved populations, including young people from rural areas, young women, and youth living with disabilities. These groups have historically been underrepresented in policy dialogues, and the program seeks to address this gap by ensuring inclusivity and equal participation.
Participants will benefit from hands-on training sessions facilitated by experienced professionals, providing practical insights into effective advocacy and organisational growth. Moreover, the initiative offers networking opportunities with regional stakeholders and peer organisations, fostering collaboration and partnerships to advance youth rights. Access to tailored resources and tools will further enhance their ability to make meaningful contributions to governance and advocacy.
Youth-led CBOs operating within Uganda are invited to express their interest in this initiative. Applications are open until January 31, 2025. This opportunity is a step forward in creating a generation of empowered youth leaders who can champion governance and legislative reforms for a more equitable and just society.
