Applications are open for the 2026 Arctic expedition season, inviting young people between 14 and 35 years old to take part in one of the most transformative learning journeys offered today.

Supported by the UN Ocean Decade, these expeditions are designed to inspire emerging leaders who are passionate about the future of the ocean, climate action, and Indigenous-led environmental stewardship.

For more than two decades, SOI has championed experiential education in the Polar Regions. Its programs bring together youth, researchers, Indigenous Elders, artists, and experts from multiple disciplines, creating spaces where participants can explore pressing environmental challenges while forming lifelong connections. Since the year 2000, more than 4,500 young people from over 50 countries have taken part in SOI expeditions, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in conservation, community development, and sustainability.

What the 2026 Expedition Offers

The upcoming Arctic season gives selected participants the chance to travel aboard the MV Ocean Nova, an ice-strengthened and fuel-efficient expedition vessel newly chartered for 2026. Its compact and environmentally conscious design allows access to remote fjords, communities, and Arctic ecosystems—places few have the chance to witness firsthand.

Throughout the journey, participants will:

• Learn directly from scientists, industry experts, and Indigenous knowledge holders

• Explore topics such as climate change, ecosystem resilience, sustainable Arctic communities, and northern cultures

• Take part in field activities and discussions that encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and global citizenship

• Build the skills and confidence needed to drive positive change in their own communities

SOI emphasizes that the expedition is more than travel—it is an immersive educational experience that blends science, culture, and leadership development.

• Funding: Full scholarships are available, and self-funded spots may also be offered

The SOI Foundation has been dedicated to advancing ocean literacy, youth leadership, and climate awareness for 25 years. Its initiatives are recognized as official contributions to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and carry the Viceregal Patronage of the Governor General of Canada. The organization continues to support its global network of alumni long after their expedition, helping young leaders move from inspiration to action—whether through further education, community projects, or impactful careers.
