The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) plays a pivotal role in global climate action, supporting the Paris Agreement and other climate initiatives. The UNFCCC Secretariat is currently offering a Fellowship opportunity through the CAPACITY Fellowship Programme, funded by the Government of Italy. This programme is designed to build the capacity of negotiators from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), with the aim of strengthening climate change resilience and sustainable development. The fellowship targets mid-career professionals in government employment from these regions.
Location:
The position is based in the Adaptation Division of the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. The Adaptation Division supports countries in enhancing adaptive capacity, reducing vulnerabilities, and strengthening resilience to climate change. The successful candidate will be involved in supporting the Nairobi Work Programme (NWP) on impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation to climate change.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support for the Intergovernmental Process:
- Assist in preparing substantive documentation for the NWP, including background papers, analyses, and policy proposals.
- Provide technical support for NWP negotiations and related adaptation topics, drafting proposals, recommendations, and reports.
- Implementation of NWP Activities:
- Support the implementation of workshops, forums, and expert meetings under the Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI).
- Develop methodologies to scale up and monitor climate change adaptation efforts across countries and regions.
- Knowledge Management and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Coordinate with UNFCCC bodies and external stakeholders, strengthening partnerships and ensuring effective collaboration.
- Develop technical documents and communication materials, supporting outreach and engagement with relevant stakeholders.

Additional Information
Monthly Stipend: EUR 4500, plus allowances.
Travel: The UNFCCC Secretariat will arrange and cover the cost of the return trip to Bonn, Germany.

Educational Background: Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field (e.g., international relations, environmental science, climate adaptation, economics, etc.). A first-level university degree plus additional relevant experience may also be considered.
Experience: At least three years of relevant professional experience in climate action and policy development. Experience in research, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge management is preferred.
Language Skills: Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.
Other Requirements:
Must be employed by a government organization in a SIDS or LDC country (including ministries, research institutes, etc.).
Maximum age of 40 at the closing date of the application.
Candidates must provide written confirmation from their employer regarding leave and the relevance of the Fellowship to their role.
