Applications are being accepted for a financed M.Sc. position at St. Francis Xavier University (Canada) in the Bishop Laboratory, where the focus will be on latitudinal patterns of symbiont diversity and specialisation in partner choice in an algal-salamander mutualism.
To ascertain the specificity of the mutualism between unicellular green algae and salamander Ambystoma maculatum egg masses along a latitudinal gradient, the study will include experiments and next-generation DNA sequencing.
In addition to handling materials from US collaborators and interacting with them, the project will involve both local and non-local material collections. Today's methods in cell and molecular biology, statistics, ecology theory, DNA sequence analysis, and microscopy will be taught to the student.
