FULLY FUNDED TO THE U.K: Apply for the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2025 for writers

Applications for the 2025 Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition are now open. This year’s theme, “Our Commonwealth Journey,” invites young writers to explore the concept of journeys in the context of the Commonwealth—whether personal, historical, or geographical. Throughout time, individuals, communities, and nations have embarked on transformative journeys, shaping their identities and experiences. The Commonwealth itself has undergone significant evolution since its founding in 1949, now comprising 56 member states and celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Participants are encouraged to reflect on the journeys the Commonwealth has taken, as well as the paths it may follow in the future. They may also explore their personal journeys within this shared global community.

Senior Category

(For participants born between May 23, 2006, and May 23, 2011, aged 14-18)

The Commonwealth Charter recognizes equal access to education as a core value. Although significant progress has been made, challenges remain. Imagine a future Commonwealth where educational opportunities are truly equal for all.

Another option is to delve into folklore and legends, which preserve cultural history across generations. Participants may reimagine a well-known tale from their own country or another Commonwealth nation in an innovative way.

Literature has the power to transport readers to new realms. As Queen Camilla noted, books offer both wisdom and escape. Writers may reflect on a book that profoundly impacted them, describing how it shaped their journey.

Nature also undergoes continuous transformation. A seedling’s growth into a towering tree is a journey in itself. Writers may tell the story of a plant growing in the heart of their community, depicting its experiences and surroundings.

Junior Category

(For participants born on or after May 23, 2011, under 14 years old)

King Charles has emphasized the Commonwealth’s diversity, representing a third of the global population. Learning about different cultures and histories can open new horizons. Writers may recount a time they discovered something fascinating about another Commonwealth nation.

The Commonwealth includes nations of varying sizes, from vast countries like India to tiny island states such as Nauru. One possible prompt is to write about a sea voyage between a larger country and a small island nation, describing encounters and discoveries along the way.

Imagination is limitless, and books allow readers to embark on remarkable adventures. Writers can create a story where they uncover a secret door leading into their favorite book, detailing the surprises that await inside.

The 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) brought leaders to Samoa. But what if animals hosted their own version of this event? Writers can envision an animal CHOGM, describing which creatures attend and what topics they discuss.

Eligibility and Awards

The competition is open to young people from Commonwealth countries and territories, as well as residents of Hong Kong, Ireland, and Zimbabwe. Those living in non-Commonwealth nations may also participate if there is a Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) branch or affiliated organization in their country. Such entries must be submitted through the respective local branch.

Winners and runners-up in each category will receive a fully funded trip to London, where they will participate in cultural and educational activities, culminating in a special awards ceremony. Additionally, outstanding entries will receive Gold Finalist, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards in recognition of literary excellence. All participants will be awarded a Certificate of Participation. In some regions, local RCS branches may organize separate ceremonies or prizes—participants are encouraged to reach out to their local branch after the competition ends on May 23, 2025, to inquire about any additional opportunities.
