FULY FUNDED TO SCOTLAND : Apply for the Childlight Global Data Fellow Programme 2027

Applications are now open for the Childlight Global Data Fellow (GDF) Programme 2027, a year-long fellowship designed for mid-career professionals and researchers committed to strengthening child protection through data, evidence, and collaborative research. Hosted by Childlight, the global child safety institute based at the University of Edinburgh, the programme equips participants with the knowledge, networks, and practical skills needed to address child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA) through evidence-informed action.

The fellowship combines virtual learning with an in-person residency and offers opportunities to collaborate with international experts, contribute to research, and engage in cross-sector initiatives aimed at improving child safety worldwide.

About the Programme

The Global Data Fellow Programme is a 12-month professional development initiative that supports practitioners and researchers working in child protection. Fellows participate in a structured learning experience focused on strengthening expertise in CSEA research while building lasting partnerships across sectors and regions.

Throughout the programme, participants will explore innovative approaches to using data for policy, research, and practice, while contributing to efforts that promote safer environments for children globally.

Financial Support

The fellowship is collaborative and does not provide a salary or employment contract. Participants are expected to remain affiliated with their home organisations during the programme.

However, Childlight will provide financial assistance for a limited number of fellows attending the Edinburgh residency, including:

  • Round-trip international airfare.
  • Accommodation during the residency.
  • Daily meals throughout the in-person programme.

Applicants requiring additional support may discuss their circumstances with the programme team if selected.

Preferred Experience

Applications are particularly encouraged from individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Knowledge of social, institutional, or policy contexts in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Public health, epidemiology, population health, or disease burden analysis.
  • Experience managing or analysing frontline datasets from sectors such as healthcare, education, policing, justice, social services, or helplines.
  • Representation from grassroots, youth-led, or survivor-led organisations.
  • Proficiency in French, Portuguese, Swahili, Arabic, or other languages relevant to work in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Participant Commitments

Fellows are expected to contribute actively throughout the programme by:

  • Participating in monthly online workshops and research meetings.
  • Collaborating on Childlight research projects and publications.
  • Sharing expertise through presentations and knowledge exchange activities.
  • Upholding high standards of research ethics and safeguarding.
  • Supporting Childlight's mission to strengthen global child protection through evidence and collaboration.

The estimated commitment is approximately 2 to 4 hours per month, in addition to attendance at the week-long residency.
