FUNDED TO GENEVA: Apply for the ISHR Human Rights Defenders Advocacy program 2025 for climate and human rights activists
Applications are now open for the 2025 Human Rights Defenders Advocacy Program (HRDAP25), hosted by the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR). This program combines remote learning and in-person sessions in Geneva, offering human rights defenders a comprehensive training experience. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to effectively engage with the United Nations human rights system and apply these strategies to their national advocacy efforts.
The program begins with a mandatory online course running part-time from April 14 to June 8, 2025, requiring participants to commit approximately 5-6 hours of work per week. During this period, participants will engage with interactive learning materials, complete assignments, attend live webinars, and participate in forum discussions. The online course is followed by a full-time, in-person training in Geneva from June 10 to June 20, 2025. This immersive segment includes hands-on advocacy activities and opportunities to collaborate with experts and peers.
Throughout the 10-week hybrid program, participants will receive personalized coaching and advocacy support. They will be guided to develop their own “Advocacy Roadmap,” a strategic framework designed to drive change in their local context. Advocacy tools, including SMART recommendations and elevator pitches, will be crafted to prepare participants for impactful engagement at the UN. Additionally, participants will practice their skills using case study scenarios and contribute to advocacy efforts during the 59th and 60th sessions of the Human Rights Council.
Scholarships are available to support participation. Full scholarships cover the complete cost of 4,000 CHF, while partial scholarships may cover the tuition fee of 1,000 CHF. Scholarships are awarded at ISHR’s discretion based on an assessment of financial need.
The program offers defenders the chance to expand their networks globally, learn from a diverse cohort of peers, and access expert knowledge on the UN human rights system. Through this opportunity, participants can build a solid foundation for meaningful advocacy and leverage international mechanisms to drive transformative change in their communities.
