About the Opportunity

Biodiversity loss continues to accelerate globally, yet media coverage of nature-related issues often remains limited compared to other environmental crises. To help close this gap, Earth Journalism Network is supporting ambitious reporting projects that inform audiences, encourage accountability, and spotlight practical solutions.

The grants aim to amplify stories that explore the intersection between nature, economies, communities, and public health while increasing visibility of underreported environmental issues.

  • Application Deadline: May 1, 2026 (11:59 PM Pacific/Niue time)

Selected applicants will also benefit from editorial mentorship and technical guidance throughout the reporting process.

Priority Reporting Themes

Applicants are invited to pitch innovative, investigative, or multimedia stories addressing one or more of the following areas:

  • Conservation approaches supporting global biodiversity targets
  • Business impacts and dependencies on ecosystems
  • Nature-based solutions linking climate, food security, and livelihoods
  • Collaborative conservation models involving communities, governments, and private sector actors
  • Links between biodiversity and human health
  • Comparative conservation approaches across Global North and Global South contexts
  • Unintended environmental consequences of conservation measures

Projects using data journalism, cross-border collaboration, or multimedia storytelling formats are strongly encouraged.

Participants in the program will:

Eligibility Criteria
- Journalists and media professionals working in print, digital, television, radio, or multimedia platforms

- Freelance reporters and newsroom staff

- Early-career and experienced journalists with professional reporting experience

- Individual applicants or journalist teams (with one designated lead applicant)

- Proposed stories must focus on low- or middle-income countries, particularly biodiversity-rich regions or areas facing severe ecological loss.

- Applications must be submitted in English, although final stories may be produced in any language with an English translation included.
