GRANTS: Apply for the Climate Justice Impact Fund for Africa grants for grassroots climate communities
CJIFA is excited to unveil its 2025 African Community Empowerment Grant Program. This initiative is geared towards strengthening grassroots participation in addressing climate change while encouraging sustainable growth. It focuses on supporting local groups and organizations to transform bold ideas into real, community-driven solutions that can inspire progress from local communities up to national and regional platforms.
This funding opportunity is tailored to boost climate finance efforts that are grounded in local realities and economic potential. By targeting developing nations across Africa, the grant program supports civil society actors such as community-based groups and local nonprofits who have shown the ability to make a significant impact with modest resources. The overarching aim is to provide these groups with the tools and support they need to scale their efforts and push for tangible environmental action and resilience.
Through this initiative, the program also seeks to deepen climate-related discussions and promote civic involvement in environmental issues. It aims to hold authorities more accountable while empowering communities to advocate for social, cultural, and economic rights. Special attention is given to initiatives that elevate the voices of underrepresented populations, including women, youth, and other marginalized communities, ensuring they have an active role in shaping sustainable futures.
The grant is open to a broad range of African nations, including Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and many others. To be eligible, applicant organizations must be legally established, independent from political or religious affiliations, and must have been engaged in community-level work for at least one to three years. Priority will be given to initiatives that show creativity, are youth- or women-led, and propose unique approaches to climate action and justice.
Proposals will be reviewed based on several key factors including originality, potential for expansion, ability to collaborate across sectors, and a strong commitment to social, economic, and ecological balance. Furthermore, successful projects should be inclusive, with participation from women, disabled persons, minority groups, and indigenous populations.
Applicants are expected to center their proposals on enhancing environmental resilience and promoting sustainable practices while also aligning their work with one or more focus areas such as governance and legal reform, gender equity, corporate responsibility in environmental issues, and economic capacity-building through skill development and innovative market access.
