Job Summary:
In order to further our work on US trade and climate policies and measures that will be essential to establishing a net-zero economy, C2ES is looking for a highly qualified and dedicated candidate to fill the role of Climate and Trade Fellow or Senior Fellow (depending on relevant expertise).
In addition to supporting C2ES's expanding stakeholder engagement initiatives, this position offers an exciting opportunity to join a team dedicated to effective and ambitious climate action.
It will concentrate on evaluating trade policies and developing policy approaches that can help decarbonise industrial emissions and encourage greater climate ambition. The Director of U.S. Policy and Outreach will receive reports from the Climate and Trade Fellow or Senior Fellow.
Requirements
Major Responsibilities:
- Collaborate closely with the Director for U.S. Policy and Outreach to establish and guide a new programmatic area at C2ES, concentrating on the convergence of U.S. climate and trade policies.
- Engage with policymakers and leading corporations, including members of C2ES’s Business Environmental Leadership Council, to identify impactful climate and trade policies.
- Support advocacy efforts aimed at enacting climate and trade policy priorities.
- Monitor, track, and report on climate and trade developments, both domestic and international, in collaboration with C2ES’s International Strategies team as needed.
- Contribute to C2ES’s reputation as a thought leader on climate-smart trade policies.
- Conduct research and analysis, contributing to written materials such as analyses, thought pieces, policy briefs, and reports, under the supervision of C2ES experts.
- Represent C2ES at relevant events in Washington, organized by other think tanks, advocacy groups, Congress, and federal agencies.
- Assist in conducting briefings with C2ES business partners on U.S. climate and trade-related policies and issues.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Expectations:
- Participate in monthly all-staff meetings led by the staff Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council (JEDI-C), which provide opportunities to interact and learn about various DEI-related topics.
- Demonstrate a commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
- Complete company training assigned during onboarding and annually, including specialized training relevant to management positions.
The Senior Fellow's additional responsibilities include:
- Act as a knowledgeable consultant for C2ES regarding trade and climate policy; assist in creating a research agenda, conduct original research and analysis, and take the lead on writing projects pertaining to trade and climate policy, such as reports, thought pieces, policy briefs, and analyses, with general direction from C2ES experts;
- Make use of your current network and expand your connections with colleagues in businesses, non-governmental organisations, and academic institutions as well as in the government, including pertinent congressional offices and federal agencies;
- Plan conferences, workshops, and other gatherings that include decision-makers, professionals, businesses, and other interested parties.
Desired Qualifications:
- Significant experience with U.S. climate and energy policies.
- Proven knowledge of climate and trade policies and agreements at both the federal and international levels (e.g., EU carbon border adjustment mechanism, U.S. border carbon adjustment proposals, G7 Climate Club, etc.).
- Familiarity with international trade theory and monetary theory, acquired through coursework or work experience.
- Experience in synthesizing and communicating U.S. domestic policy developments to general audiences.
- Previous experience with climate policy engagement, including working with coalitions, trade associations, or similar collaborative efforts involving diverse stakeholders.
- Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments efficiently, meeting critical deadlines.
- Capability to work both collaboratively and independently as needed.
Additional Desired Qualifications for the Senior Fellow:
- Extensive knowledge of climate and trade policies and agreements at the federal and international levels.
- Proven experience in synthesizing and communicating U.S. domestic policy developments to public audiences.
- Successful track record with climate policy engagement, including working with coalitions, trade associations, or similar collaborative efforts involving diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently in alignment with agreed program strategy.
- Proven success in highly collaborative, team-based environments, with a commitment to professional development and mentoring.
- Experience in supervising direct reports and/or external contractors/consultants.
Travel and Location:
C2ES has a hybrid work model based out of our downtown Washington, DC office. We prefer applicants who are either based in or willing to relocate to the Washington, DC metro area, with an expectation of being in the office at least three days a week. However, we are also open to considering remote applicants for this position.

Starting Salary Base:
Based on experience and qualifications, the salary for a Fellow ranges from $76,000 to $95,000, while the salary for a Senior Fellow ranges from $95,000 to $119,000.
Status:
This is a full-time position with eligibility for benefits.

- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (such as economics, environmental or energy policy, environmental studies, or political science) with at least 4 years of direct experience in trade or climate and energy, OR a Master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 2 years of direct experience in trade or climate and energy.
- Exceptional writing, editing, research, and analytical skills.
- A broad understanding of climate change across various disciplines (e.g., economics, markets, technology, politics, etc.).
- Ability to quickly comprehend dense and complex information.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal communication and presentation abilities.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- A willingness to learn and contribute at all levels.
- A commitment to, knowledge of, or experience in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental/climate justice.
The following are further requirements for the Senior Fellow:
a Ph.D. in a related subject OR a Bachelor's degree in a similar discipline with a minimum of 8 years of direct experience in trade and climate and energy OR a Master's degree in a related field with at least 5 years of direct experience in trade or climate and energy;
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (such as economics, environmental or energy policy, environmental studies, or political science) with at least 4 years of direct experience in trade or climate and energy, OR a Master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 2 years of direct experience in trade or climate and energy.
