Internship : UNESCO is seeking interns for the Project Office of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) – Apply  now 

UNESCO is currently seeking two interns to support the Project Office of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) within the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, based in Venice, Italy. These interns will assist with the implementation of ocean literacy activities from February 2025 to July 2025 (approximately six months).

Under the guidance of the Senior Programme Officer and the Director’s authority, the interns will undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Support in developing and completing outdoor activities for the “Kindergarten of the Lagoon” project.
  • Assist in delivering educational activities at the Ocean Literacy Center in San Servolo and collaborate on the "Gite Biodiverse" initiative with CNR.
  • Help develop and implement the IOC Ocean Literacy training courses and educational materials for projects such as SEA BEYOND and Save the Wave.
  • Assist in maintaining relationships with research institutions, universities, NGOs, government bodies, and other UN agencies involved in ocean literacy activities.
  • Contribute to organizing events related to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 and the Third UN Ocean Conference.
  • Support communication and social media activities.
  • Regularly update mailing and contact lists, consolidating information from external partners.
  • Perform additional tasks as required.

Important Information:

  • The minimum internship duration is one month, with a maximum of six months.
  • Applicants are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas and financing their travel to the internship location.
  • Proof of comprehensive health insurance is required.
  • Limited insurance coverage will be provided by UNESCO (up to USD 30,000) in case of illness, disability, or death during the internship.
  • Applicants must provide a medical certificate confirming they are fit to work before starting.
  • Supporting documents such as ID, Certificate of Enrollment, or Diploma (if recently graduated) must be submitted.
  • Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month.
  • Make sure your contact details are valid for the next six months before applying.
  • Only one application per candidate is allowed, and you can apply in either English or French. If your documents are not in one of these languages, please provide an unofficial translation.

  • UNESCO does not provide financial compensation for internships.
  • There are no guarantees of placement, as UNESCO receives more qualified applications than available positions.

Eligibility Criteria
Currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within 12 months) with a second-level or Master’s degree in education, science communication, ocean science, development studies, or a related field.
Basic understanding of UNESCO’s mandate, structure, and activities, particularly in the field of sciences.
Full proficiency in English is required; knowledge of other UN languages and Italian is advantageous.
Experience or interest in environmental education and science communication is preferred.
