Internship/ Volunteer Opportunity: Join the United Nations Ocean Decade as a Stakeholder Coordination Intern or Volunteer
The United Nations declared the Ocean Decade in December 2017 as a global initiative to promote ocean science for sustainable development from 2021 to 2030. The objective of this decade-long program is to improve our understanding of the ocean and its crucial role in sustaining the planet. The UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), which oversees the Decade, is currently looking for an intern or volunteer to assist the Ocean Decade Coordination Unit with tasks related to stakeholder engagement and communication.
Role and Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Ocean Decade Stakeholder Coordination Officer and in close collaboration with the broader team. Responsibilities will include:
- Coordination & Communication: Support stakeholder engagement by liaising with Decade Coordination Offices and National Decade Committees. Collect updates on activities, draft communications, and assist in organizing meetings, webinars, and workshops. Disseminate meeting outcomes and follow up on action points.
- Engagement Strategy: Conduct research to help develop engagement strategies, considering the priorities of key stakeholders. Assist in preparing meeting agendas, presentations, and briefing materials.
- Partnership Development: Identify potential new partners for the Ocean Decade. Help create partnership proposals, outreach documents, and review new applicants for relevant Decade programs.
Internship Details:
- Duration: 3 months, starting around 17 February 2025 (extension possible). The position can be done remotely, but a mix of remote and office work may be required for those based near UNESCO-IOC offices.
- Learning Opportunities: Gain valuable experience in stakeholder engagement, project management, and knowledge of the UN system. Develop analytical skills in ocean science disciplines.

Additional Information
Academic Requirements: Candidates must be pursuing or have completed a postgraduate degree in ocean science, ocean management, or policy.
Strong skills in research, organization, and communication.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and online collaboration tools such as Teams and Zoom.
Fluency in English, with knowledge of additional UN languages (French, Spanish) being an advantage.
Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team environment.
