Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) was established in 2001 under the Companies Act (Cap 110) and the Electricity Act (Cap 145). Its primary role was to assume responsibility for electricity generation operations previously managed by the now-defunct Uganda Electricity Board (UEB). In accordance with the Public Enterprise Reform and Divestiture Act, UEGCL acquired specific assets, liabilities, and operations from UEB, including the 180 MW Nalubaale and 200 MW Kiira Hydro Power Stations located in Jinja.
Over time, UEGCL’s generation capacity has significantly expanded. The company now oversees a broader portfolio that includes the 183 MW Isimba Hydropower Plant, the 50 MW Namanve Thermal Power Plant, and the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Plant. UEGCL operates under the regulatory oversight of the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).
