SUMMARY OF THE POST'S FUNCTIONS

For UNESCO's Culture Sector (Major Programme IV), the Assistant Director-General for Culture exercises managerial oversight, intellectual vision, and strategic leadership under the direction of the Director-General. In order to maintain UNESCO's position as the world leader in culture, the incumbent is in charge of developing and carrying out the sector's overarching strategy.

In close coordination with other Assistant Directors-General, the incumbent ensures that culture is fully incorporated into UNESCO's wider program delivery, especially with regard to education, the sciences, communication, and information.

2. Director, IISTEM (STEM Education Institute) | Shanghai | Deadline: 9 May

SUMMARY OF THE POST'S FUNCTIONS

To head this new Institute, UNESCO is looking for a proactive and forward-thinking director. The ideal applicant will be an experienced leader who can guide and support the Institute's vision and mandate. As IISTEM's academic and executive head, the Director will be in charge of developing the organization's strategy, allocating funds, and managing a skilled workforce to produce quantifiable worldwide impact.

3. Assistant Director-General for Sciences | Paris | Deadline: 26 May

SUMMARY OF THE POST'S FUNCTIONS

In accordance with the Organization's Medium-Term Strategy for 2022–2029 document (41 C/4) and the decisions of the governing bodies, the Assistant Director-General for Sciences is tasked by the Director-General with providing intellectual leadership and strategic vision for the Sciences Sector. Therefore, Major Programme II (Natural Sciences) and Major Programme III (Social and Human Sciences), which have been approved by UNESCO's governing bodies, including for its category 1 institute (the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics), are overseen by the Assistant Director-General for Sciences.

Utilising the natural, fundamental, social, and human sciences as a transformative force for sustainability, human rights, gender equality, and peace is the goal of the sciences sector.
