Join the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) as a Regional Focal Point 2025
The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) was established in 2012 under the leadership of the United Nations Secretary-General. Its mission is to draw upon global scientific and technological expertise to advance practical strategies for sustainable development. SDSN is focused on addressing interconnected global challenges, including economic, social, and environmental issues, while promoting the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. Through collaboration and knowledge-sharing, the network strives to create integrated approaches to these pressing issues.
In 2015, SDSN launched SDSN Youth to inspire and empower young people to contribute to sustainable development. The initiative works to amplify youth voices, build their capacities, and foster advocacy efforts in alignment with global development priorities. SDSN Youth has been instrumental in connecting young people worldwide with opportunities to promote the SDGs, engaging them in education, advocacy, and collaboration to accelerate progress.
A Regional Focal Point (RFP) serves as a critical link within SDSN Youth, connecting regional and national networks to the broader global structure. This role focuses on supporting regional youth networks, facilitating collaboration among them, and ensuring that their activities align with the SDGs. The RFP actively fosters partnerships, scales impactful initiatives, and drives region-specific efforts to address local sustainable development priorities. By regularly engaging with the global SDSN Youth team, the RFP ensures that regional activities are integrated into the global mission.
The responsibilities of an RFP include building relationships within the region to promote cooperation and knowledge-sharing among networks. They offer guidance on managing projects, improving communication, and utilizing effective tools to maximize impact. Additionally, RFPs track and report activities, highlighting progress and challenges while seeking new opportunities for collaboration. Regular communication through calls and updates is essential to maintaining strong ties between regional and global teams.
Candidates for this role should have experience in team management or project coordination and demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainable development. A background in youth leadership, along with a familiarity with the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement, is highly valued. Applicants should be aged between 18 and 30, fluent in English, and based in the African region (Africa focal point) and (Asia-Pacific for Asia Focal point) for at least a year following their application. Experience with professional or volunteer work, as well as the ability to use management tools like Google Suite, is considered an asset.
This voluntary position requires a commitment of approximately 10 hours per week and spans an initial 12-month period, subject to a three-month performance review. Successful candidates will complete relevant training programs and induction courses before beginning their responsibilities. Although unpaid, the role offers a wealth of opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Serving as an RFP provides a unique chance to represent SDSN Youth in global forums, engage in policy discussions, and work with stakeholders across government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. It enables individuals to enhance their personal brand by focusing on sustainability and the SDGs, while also contributing written content on subjects they are passionate about. This role also fosters valuable experiences in a diverse, multicultural environment and provides access to training resources to further develop skills and knowledge.
This position is ideal for those who are passionate about sustainability and eager to play an active role in advancing global development goals while strengthening their leadership and professional capacities.
