Empowering Young Tanzanian Leaders: Apply for the 2025 Wangari Maathai Fellowship

The Climate Hub Tanzania, with the generous support of Climate-KIC, is launching the Wangari Maathai Fellowship, a unique opportunity designed to equip passionate young leaders with the tools and support they need to drive environmental change. This initiative seeks to honor the legacy of Wangari Maathai, a trailblazing environmentalist from Kenya and the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. As the founder of the Green Belt Movement, she championed environmental conservation, climate justice, and community-led action. This fellowship aims to carry forward her mission by empowering the next generation of changemakers in Tanzania.

Raising awareness about climate change is crucial, but meaningful progress requires action. Through past engagements with young climate leaders, Climate Hub Tanzania identified a major challenge: financial barriers preventing them from turning their ideas into impactful solutions. In response, this fellowship was created to bridge that gap by offering financial assistance, mentorship, and knowledge-building opportunities. By supporting emerging environmental leaders, this program strengthens climate resilience, encourages grassroots activism, and fosters policy engagement to create lasting change.

The fellowship will run for eight months, from April to November 2025, and will take place in a hybrid format, combining both virtual and in-person participation. A total of ten outstanding individuals will be selected to receive financial support of €500 each to implement climate projects in their communities. In addition to this funding, participants will benefit from expert mentorship and hands-on training to enhance their understanding of climate action, environmental governance, advocacy, and project execution. The program is designed to provide fellows with the skills and experience needed to lead impactful sustainability initiatives while growing their personal and professional capacities.

Eligible candidates must be between 20 and 30 years old, fluent in both English and Kiswahili, and recent university graduates. This opportunity is exclusively for individuals based in Tanzania who are committed to environmental sustainability and eager to make a difference in their communities. Selected fellows will gain valuable insights into climate policy, advocacy strategies, and project management while receiving direct financial support to implement their own environmental initiatives. Additionally, participants will engage in networking opportunities, collaborate with policymakers, and contribute to meaningful climate discussions on both local and national levels.
