Paid Fellowship of $1,800 monthly : Be part of the Data Science Fellowships for the Africa Climate and Health Data Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN)

The Africa Climate and Health Data Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN) program, in collaboration with data.org and funded by the Wellcome Trust, provides data science training and experiential learning opportunities through a fellowship program. This initiative aims to strengthen data science capacity within government departments and social impact organizations in Africa, with a focus on climate and health intersections. Fellows will work on country-specific use cases, applying data science skills under the guidance of experts.

Program Objectives: The CAN Fellowship program is designed to enhance the skills and capacity of National Statistical Systems (NSS), National Statistical Offices (NSOs), Ministries of Agriculture, Health, or Environment, and relevant government departments or SIOs in Africa. Fellows will assist with statistical and data development related to climate and health, working on projects involving reporting, dashboard creation, or software development.

Location: Embedded within a Government Office or Social Impact Organization (SIO) in Africa

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables:

  • Receive training on the execution of the specific use case.
  • Develop a project plan to execute and support the use case.
  • Submit monthly progress reports detailing work completed and challenges faced.
  • Provide ongoing support for the use cases within the assigned government department or SIO.
  • Facilitate knowledge and skills sharing within the team and across the organization.
  • Engage in peer exchange activities with other fellows, departments, and organizations.

Reporting: Fellows will report to the project team at the host government department or SIO, as well as the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data.

Eligibility Criteria
A completed first university degree.
At least 3 years of experience in data management, analysis, and visualization.
Strong communication skills with the ability to analyze both quantitative and qualitative data.
Expertise in technology, systems development, big data, open data, and data science.
Familiarity with African countries' contexts, particularly in climate and health.
Availability to commit to a full-time position and actively participate in all program activities.
Fellows will be expected to work on-site within the government department or SIO office, with some flexibility for remote work.
