NATO provides six-month internship opportunities for students in their third year of undergraduate studies as well as for individuals who have recently completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
These internships span a wide array of disciplines, offering hands-on experience in fields such as political and security affairs, innovation, communications, operations, human resources, finance, science and technology, infrastructure, and business support.
All internships are based at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium—a vibrant, international city known for hosting numerous European and global organizations, making it a dynamic hub for networking and professional growth.
This programme provides a unique chance to engage with the NATO community, offering valuable practical experience and deeper insights into how the Alliance functions.
Goals of the Programme

To give participants firsthand exposure to NATO’s work and help them develop a well-rounded understanding of the organization.

To benefit NATO by integrating fresh academic knowledge and technical skills into its operations through the interns’ contributions.

To promote awareness and understanding of NATO’s mission among citizens of member countries.
Interns may be placed within the International Staff, International Military Staff, or various NATO agencies and bodies operating at headquarters.

Additional Information
Participants in the NATO-funded internship program receive a monthly stipend of EUR 1,286 for the year 2025. This amount is reviewed annually to reflect inflation and adjustments to NATO salary standards.
Travel Support:
Upon confirmation of your internship start date, NATO will cover your travel expenses to Brussels, providing a prepaid flight or train ticket from your place of residence, up to a maximum of EUR 1,200 for a round trip in economy class. If you choose to drive, travel costs will be reimbursed within the same limit.
Paid Leave:
Interns are granted 15 days of paid vacation over the course of their six-month assignment.
Learning Opportunities:
Interns participate in a comprehensive onboarding programme and attend monthly briefings designed to deepen their understanding of NATO’s structure and operations. These sessions also offer valuable chances to engage with NATO professionals, connect with fellow interns, and discuss key policy topics. Additionally, organized visits to institutions such as the European Parliament enhance the learning experience.
Citizenship: Open to individuals who hold citizenship from a NATO member state.
Academic Requirements: Candidates should have completed at least two years of university education and be currently enrolled in their third year, or they must have graduated within the past 12 months with their highest academic qualification.
Language Skills: Fluency in either English or French—the two official NATO languages—is required. Having a working understanding of the other language is advantageous. Additional language skills may be beneficial for specific roles.
