Applications are open for the Samuel Fellows in Belonging Fellowship, an international research and leadership programme organized by Belonging Forum. The fellowship supports individuals interested in exploring solutions to social isolation while strengthening community connections through research, storytelling, and collaborative action.

The programme provides a platform for emerging leaders, researchers, storytellers, and individuals with lived experiences to examine the concept of belonging and contribute to practical solutions that help communities become more inclusive and connected.

Over the course of eight months, selected fellows will carry out an applied research project focused on social connectedness and belonging. These projects are typically developed in collaboration with a partner organization and may address topics such as public policy, community development, education, health, urban design, and social justice.

Participants will also benefit from mentorship, research training, and professional development opportunities while working alongside a global network of changemakers.

Fellowship Structure

The Samuel Fellows in Belonging programme combines research, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Fellows will:

• Conduct an applied research project related to belonging and social connection.

• Work with a partner organization to explore practical solutions to social challenges.

• Participate in training sessions, workshops, and mentorship opportunities.

• Engage in regular cohort discussions and collaborative learning activities.

• Produce public-facing outputs such as reports, essays, or research briefs.

The fellowship is conducted entirely online, allowing participation from individuals around the world.

Applicants do not necessarily need to be enrolled in a university programme. The fellowship values both academic expertise and practical or lived experience.

Eligibility and Skills

While eligibility may vary depending on the specific fellowship project, successful applicants generally demonstrate:

• A strong interest in building inclusive and connected communities.

• Curiosity about research and social issues related to belonging and social cohesion.

• Strong English writing and communication skills.

• Ability to manage an independent research project and collaborate with partner organizations.

Fellowship Support

Fellows receive guidance and mentorship from both the Belonging Forum team and partner organizations. Support typically includes:

• Research guidance and subject-matter expertise

• Workshops and capacity-building sessions

• Regular check-ins with programme managers

• Opportunities to collaborate with other fellows

At the end of the fellowship, participants submit a final research output, which is published on the Belonging Forum website and shared across its global platforms.
