Travel Grants for African Ocean Professionals to Attend UN Ocean Conferences
Are you an African Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) passionate about ocean science, marine policy, or sustainable development? Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to elevate your career on the global stage! The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) is offering travel grants for African ECOPs to participate in the Third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) and the One Ocean Science (OOS) Congress in 2025. These prestigious events provide a unique platform for African professionals to gain international exposure and contribute to global ocean sustainability discussions.
Why This Opportunity Matters
Africa’s coastal and marine ecosystems are vital to the continent’s future. With around 70% of African nations located along coastlines, sustainable ocean management plays a critical role in economic and social development. The next generation of African ocean leaders must be equipped to lead research, policy-making, and innovation in marine conservation. Recognizing the importance of empowering young ocean professionals, IOC-UNESCO aims to strengthen their capacity through international exposure, mentorship, and networking.
What are UNOC3 and the OOS Congress?
•UNOC3 (June 9-13, 2025, Nice, France): Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, this conference will accelerate global action towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water). It will bring together experts, policymakers, financial institutions, and Indigenous communities to assess progress and forge new partnerships.
•OOS Congress (June 3-6, 2025): This event will serve as a key scientific precursor to UNOC3. It will address pressing issues such as ocean health, climate change, conservation strategies, and sustainable marine resource use. Insights from this congress will shape discussions at UNOC3 with cutting-edge research and innovation.
