The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) has introduced the Women in Wind Global Leadership Program with the aim of expediting the advancement of women in the wind sector, assisting them in reaching leadership roles, and cultivating an international network focused on mentorship, sharing knowledge, and empowerment.

The report "Wind energy: A gender perspective" by IRENA/Women in Wind also highlighted a significant leadership disparity, indicating that merely 8 percent of top management positions in the global wind energy industry are occupied by women. Most women are found in administrative and non-STEM positions within the wind energy sector.

GWEC and GWNET urge other actors in the renewable energy sector to acknowledge the significance of ensuring equal involvement in combating climate change and advancing sustainable development. By empowering the next cohort of guardians for a sustainable energy landscape, we reaffirm that our endeavors are consistent with UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 (achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls) and UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all).

An array of mentors comprising prominent women in the wind industry.
A comprehensive educational initiative, expandable annually, integrating cutting-edge technology advancements and industry best practices. It covers various domains including policy advocacy, project management, project financing, turbine engineering, and more.
A platform aiding leading companies in the field to identify talent and achieve new gender equality benchmarks, thereby optimizing their workforce. An expanding alumni network poised to mentor future generations of women entering the industry over the next decade, as wind emerges as a predominant energy source globally.

A mentorship initiative featuring monthly virtual sessions.

About

Gender diversity drives innovation, opens new pathways for technology deployment, brings valuable perspectives to social and economic development and provides a richer pool of talent for key and emerging industries. In the landscape of global issues requiring strong leadership and a skilled workforce, few areas are as critical as the transition to a sustainable energy system. 

Yet, as documented in the January 2020 report “Wind energy: A gender perspective,” released by IRENA and Women in Wind, the wind energy industry continues to be male-dominated.  Around 21 per cent of the global wind energy workforce is women, falling below the 32 per cent share of women in the global renewables workforce and even the 22 per cent share of women in the conventional energy sector workforce, according to IRENA’s 2019 report “Renewable energy: a gender perspective.”

Who is eligible to apply?

The program is guided by the principles of diversity in both background and geographic representation. Now entering its sixth year in 2024, the initiative is expanding its reach to include more participants from various sectors. Additionally, it is extending invitations for applications from three new emerging markets in the wind industry: China, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.

Advocating for diversity in developing nations and burgeoning markets is a fundamental tenet of the program. Prospective applicants must be citizens or residents of the following emerging markets for wind energy: Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

- Four or more years of experience in the wind energy sector.
- Demonstrated leadership and accomplishments in a professional capacity or otherwise.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, at a professional level.
