Fully Funded by GIZ : Apply for a short course on The Political Economy Of Land Governance in Africa at the University of the Western Cape 

Applications are open for the  for the NELGA_AU university-accredited online course on Land Governance in Africa.

Why are you taking this course?
Most people living in Africa's rural and urban areas have uncertain tenure rights, either legally or practically. The legacy of land dispossession, colonial legal codes, disputed traditional tenure systems, and increasing land demand due to commercial investments are all challenges they must contend with. How can land governance and rights be reinforced in Africa? Building a highly skilled cohort of land professionals and land policy makers is necessary to address these difficulties. These leaders will leave this quick course prepared to address the continent's land-related issues.

What's provided?
In partnership with the African Land Policy Centre (ALPC), the Institute for Poverty, Land & Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) at the University of the Western Cape is offering a brief course on the Political Economy of Land Governance in Africa. Both training and evaluation will take place in English.

When is it available?
Zoom will be used to facilitate the online short course. For the duration of the course, it is expected that participants will be online. View the schedule provided below.

Every day, there are three sessions at Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
10:30–12:30 8:00–10:00
15:00–13:30

GMT+1 West African Time: 09:00–11:00 11:30–13:30
16:00–15:00

GMT+2 Central African Time
10:00 – 12:30 – 14:30
15:00–17:00

GMT+3 East African Time
11:00–13,000 and 13:30–15:00

What is covered in the course material?
Throughout the brief course, the following major ideas and themes will be covered:

  1. Pre-colonial and colonial histories of customary and statutory land tenure in Africa
  2. Introduction to the political economy of land in Africa
  3. Land reform law, policy and governance in Africa
  4. Women’s land rights in Africa
  5. Natural resource access and management in Africa
  6. Political economy of extractive industries and land rights
  7. Commodification of the commons in the transition to neo-liberalism
  8. Urban and rural land administration in Africa
  9. Large-scale land acquisitions in Africa
  10. African and global land policy and policy guidelines
  11. Climate crisis and land governance

How are the participants going to be evaluated?
Participants will be evaluated through a pre-contact assignment, group evaluation, and final submission of an individual reflective report because this is an approved course. Attendees will either get:

a Certificate of Attendance for individuals who attend at least 80% of the sessions and participate in 50% of the in-session assignments but do not finish the assessment activities; or a Certificate of Competence for those who attend 100% of the sessions and successfully complete all the assessments.

Under the Network of Excellence in Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) project, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbelt (GIZ) GmbH and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) are providing funding for the short course. The online short course training is free for the chosen participants. To join the course, selected participants must guarantee they have access to a reliable internet infrastructure.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates should have at least three to four years of work experience in addition to an undergraduate degree. If an applicant has at least ten to fifteen years of experience, they may be evaluated even without a university degree. Candidates must be fluent in written and spoken English.
Application Procedure
Please fill out the online application form in order to apply. It will be necessary for you to upload:

a 300-word statement outlining your qualifications and the significance of your work; and a 500-word essay discussing governance issues pertaining to land, natural resources, fisheries, or forestry in the context of your work.
