Background

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent think tank that provides essential knowledge to facilitate action. IISD hosts the Secretariat for the Friends of Climate and Health, a coalition of countries promoting international collaboration at the intersection of climate change and health.

Many nations have shown a strong commitment to incorporating health considerations into climate policy discussions, particularly within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This interest has been fueled by growing political momentum, exemplified by the inaugural Health Day at COP 28 and the endorsement of the COP 28 declaration on climate and health by over 150 countries.

In response to member requests, the Friends of Climate and Health Secretariat will focus on: (1) creating a community of countries actively engaged in climate and health dialogues, (2) developing a shared understanding among UNFCCC delegations of the importance of health and well-being in climate negotiations, and (3) providing a platform for informal discussions on integrating health into UNFCCC processes and advancing related actions.

The Secretariat is managed by a small, diverse team of IISD staff, Secretariat Leads, and Policy Advisors (consultants) with extensive expertise in climate policy, multilateral environmental negotiations, and the UNFCCC.

JOBS

1. IISD Policy Advisors on Climate and Health (part-time consultants)

• The Policy Advisors on Climate and Health will support the Friends of Climate and Health Secretariat by building relationships with countries and providing technical support on climate change and health. They will develop relationships with country negotiators, support countries with onboarding, technical support, and advice, and assist the Secretariat with Friends meetings. They will also provide technical support on UNFCCC processes, consult with experts, and regularly communicate updates. They will ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion are considered in climate and health engagement.
• Knowledge and Qualifications

  Candidates should:

  - Have current or past experience working on projects or initiatives related to the UNFCCC.
  - Show a solid understanding of multilateral negotiations and the broader UN system.
  - Possess established relationships and experience collaborating with national governments (please mention any specific regional expertise in your cover letter).
  - Be fully proficient in English, both spoken and written, with recent experience in English writing. Proficiency in other UN languages is a valuable asset.
  - Thrive in small, highly collaborative teams.
  - Be willing and able to travel internationally for meetings, potentially for periods of up to two weeks.
