The Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) Fellowships are designed for mid-career scholars or professionals committed to advancing academic work that fosters a deeper understanding of Islamic culture, civilization, and contemporary Muslim societies.

These fellowships are offered in partnership between the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office and OCIS, including:

- Chevening OCIS Fellowship
- Chevening OCIS Abdullah Gül Fellowship (specifically for Turkish citizens)

Program Overview:
Fellows will engage in a self-directed research project over five months, focusing on the culture and civilization of Islam and modern Muslim societies within a global context. Participants will collaborate with a multidisciplinary network of scholars specializing in the Islamic world, discussing various topics such as Islamic history, classical Islamic sciences, economics and finance, public health, technology in the Muslim world, and Muslim communities in the West.

Through this, fellows will help promote sustained dialogue and collaboration within the global academic community related to Islamic culture and civilization.

The fellowship, which begins in October 2024, requires fellows to live in Oxford during the award period. OCIS will assist selected fellows with accommodation options.

Program Benefits
The fellowship includes a five-month research period at OCIS, coverage for living expenses during the stay, and a round-trip economy airfare from the fellow's home country to the UK. It also provides a research allowance for related activities and access to a range of cultural events and activities organized by the FCDO and the Chevening Secretariat.
Eligibility Criteria
The Chevening OCIS Abdullah Gül Fellowship is available for applicants from Turkey.

To qualify for a Chevening OCIS Fellowship, candidates must:

- Show potential for leadership and influence.
- Exhibit personal, intellectual, and interpersonal qualities that reflect this potential.
- Be a citizen of one of the following countries: Afghanistan (see note), Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Philippines, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, or Uzbekistan.
- Commit to returning to their home country after the fellowship period.
- Hold a postgraduate degree (or equivalent professional training/experience in a relevant field) at the time of application.
- Have a minimum of five years of significant professional or academic research experience.
- Demonstrate strong proficiency in English, as assessed through the application and interview process.
- Not hold British or dual British citizenship.
- Not be an employee, former employee, or relative* of His Majesty’s Government (including the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, British Embassies/High Commissions, and several other departments) or any other Chevening-affiliated institutions within two years of the application opening.

*Note: Immediate relatives include parents, step-parents, siblings, step-siblings, children, step-children, spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner (in a relationship akin to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years).

Applicants who have previously received funding from an HMG scholarship or fellowship are eligible after a five-year gap and must demonstrate career progress since their previous award.

Applicants must submit a short research proposal at the time of application, including a primary research question and how they plan to conduct their research while at the Centre.
