Applications are now open for the 2025 Echidna Global Scholars Program, a fellowship hosted by the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. The program is designed to empower leaders from the Global South who are focused on advancing gender equality through education. This six-month fellowship provides scholars the opportunity to conduct research that enhances education and life opportunities for girls, young women, and gender non-conforming individuals. Participants will also develop leadership and policy skills, and expand their knowledge in gender and education.
The fellowship has two key phases. The first is the pre-residency phase, which focuses on data collection and virtual workshops to lay the groundwork for research and leadership development. This phase involves a commitment of 15-20 hours per week. During the residency phase in Washington, DC, scholars engage in deep research, refine their policy impact strategies, and disseminate their work through Brookings’ platforms. This phase is aimed at expanding scholars’ networks and impact, culminating in a symposium on gender and education.
Scholars should have extensive experience in the Global South and must commit to returning to their home countries to implement their research findings. Applicants are required to have a master’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in education, gender studies, or a related field. The program seeks leaders who are passionate about improving educational outcomes and committed to long-term change.
Selected scholars will receive a $25,000 stipend, visa assistance, housing during the residency period, round-trip travel costs, and health insurance. Scholars are expected to fully participate in all program activities, from pre-residency data collection to residency events in Washington, DC. Special consideration will be given to applicants working in priority areas such as West Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa.
