PAID FELLOWSHIP WITH STIPENDS : Apply for the 2025 Amnesty International Graduate Governance Fellowship
Amnesty International South Africa (AISA) is seeking a young law graduate at the early stage of their career to join as a Graduate Governance Fellow. This fellow will support Amnesty’s Johannesburg office and its Board of Directors through document drafting, research, policy development, and the execution of governance projects.

AISA is part of a global human rights movement, focused on addressing key national human rights issues through research, advocacy, campaigning, and education. In South Africa, AISA empowers individuals to act on issues that are important to them, aiming to use South Africa’s regional and global influence to promote human rights locally and internationally.
About the Position
Amnesty International South Africa seeks a motivated, independent individual to help uphold excellence in NGO governance. Candidates should align with Amnesty International’s values and have demonstrable experience in human rights activism.
This fellowship spans from January to November 2025, offering direct engagement with Amnesty’s Board, Executive Director, and staff, where the fellow will leverage legal and policy expertise to support governance tasks. Additionally, the fellow will gain exposure to human rights work through structured job-shadowing with law firms and public interest organizations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Support Amnesty’s Board and, as needed, the National Secretariat, including:
- Conducting research and drafting governance-related documents,
- Contributing to discussions on AISA’s governance policies,
- Assisting the National Secretariat with research, advocacy, and campaigns,
- Preparing detailed minutes and reports from board meetings,
- Providing administrative support as needed.

- A law degree (LL.B. or equivalent) or related field.
- Fluency in at least two South African languages is preferred.

Appropriateness of a candidate Amnesty International or any of our partners in the job shadowing program may require a candidate to sign a non-disclosure or other additional agreement. Amnesty International South Africa reserves the right not to fill this position. The chosen candidate will be notified by December 13, 2024. Candidates are expected to begin work as soon as January 2, 2025, after completing training and induction.
