FULLY FUNDED TO COVER THE UN OCEAN CONFERENCE 2025 IN FRANCE: Apply for this Internews Earth Journalism Network fellowship
Applications are now open for the 2025 Fellowship Program by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN), designed to support journalists in attending the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3). This global event, scheduled to take place in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025, will focus on advancing efforts to protect and sustainably manage ocean resources. The conference is an important platform for accelerating progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), which emphasizes the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine ecosystems.
Journalists from nations with coastlines, particularly those from the Mediterranean region and low- to middle-income countries, are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be established media professionals or freelancers with proven experience reporting on ocean-related issues, such as illegal fishing, pollution, acidification, and innovative solutions like marine policy measures, blue bonds, or new global treaties. Candidates must also outline the stories they aim to pursue while covering the conference.
To qualify, applicants must commit to attending the conference from June 9 to 13, with travel planned from June 7 to 14, 2025. Proficiency in English is required, along with an up-to-date CV and a letter of endorsement from an editor or supervisor confirming that the applicant’s work will be published or broadcast. Freelancers must provide similar confirmation from a media outlet. Additionally, candidates should submit recent journalistic work samples related to ocean issues, accompanied by English summaries if the original pieces are not in English. These samples should have been published within the past year and include clear bylines.
Selected fellows will receive full financial and logistical support to participate in the conference. This includes economy-class airfare, accommodation, meals, travel insurance, and local transportation. Fellows will also receive a per diem to cover daily expenses and assistance with press accreditation. While visa arrangements remain the fellow’s responsibility, EJN will reimburse visa-related expenses. Participants will also join a pre-conference virtual workshop to prepare for reporting, connect with peers, and engage with media trainers.
Ultimately, this fellowship aims to select five to eight journalists who will benefit from the opportunity to report on key discussions and developments during the UN Ocean Conference, contributing to global efforts to protect marine ecosystems.
