INTERNSHIP : UNEP-WCMC is looking for a talented intern to contribute to the OBSGESSION initiative

The Science team at UNEP-WCMC is looking for a talented intern to contribute to the OBSGESSION initiative, a European Commission-funded project aimed at improving the understanding of the direct and indirect factors driving biodiversity change.

This internship focuses on enhancing the understanding of ecosystem changes by integrating citizen science data with expert in-situ datasets. The intern will be instrumental in engaging the iNaturalist community and increasing participation in specific campaigns.

Key learning objectives include:
🔸 Gaining insight into the structure, strategy, and operations of a typical conservation organization.
🔸 Understanding biodiversity practices within an organizational setting.
🔸 Acquiring experience in a project-driven environment and strengthening time management skills to meet deadlines.
🔸 Gaining exposure to the interaction between international science organizations and businesses.
🔸 Gaining hands-on experience in combining citizen science data with expert in-situ datasets for biodiversity monitoring.
🔸 Developing community engagement skills by working with platforms like iNaturalist to boost participation and expand data collection in under-documented areas.
🔸 Learning to analyze and assess citizen science data and its role in advancing ecological research and decision-making.
🔸 Enhancing problem-solving skills by addressing data gaps in biodiversity and developing strategies to fill them effectively.

Eligibility Criteria
Required qualifications:
🌿 A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as environmental sciences, sustainability, or development studies.
🌿 A strong interest in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem monitoring, and data-driven ecological research.
🌿 Basic knowledge of biodiversity data collection methods and ecological concepts.
🌿 Strong attention to detail and analytical skills for evaluating datasets and identifying patterns or gaps in biodiversity data.
🌿 Familiarity with citizen science platforms, particularly iNaturalist, or a willingness to learn.
🌿 Experience with digital communication, including social media.
🌿 The ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage tasks effectively in a project-based environment.
