Fully Funded To Cape Town, South Africa: Apply for the 5-day training on co-designing solutions for ocean sustainability

WIOMSA-SCALABLE and partners invite marine scientists, policymakers and community leaders to an immersive workshop focused on inclusive, action-oriented solutions for ocean sustainability.

If you are actively involved in addressing ocean sustainability issues within your institution or community and are seeking to enhance the impact and inclusivity of your work, this training is for you. Whether you aim to foster effective collaborations between scientists, policymakers, community representatives, and other ocean stakeholders or want to learn how to co-create practical solutions, this immersive 5-day in-person training might be the opportunity you need.

About the Training
The WIO region, known for its diverse marine ecosystems and vibrant coastal communities, faces growing environmental and socio-economic pressures, including habitat loss, overfishing, and the impacts of climate change. Tackling these challenges requires innovative, collaborative approaches that bring together diverse perspectives and knowledge systems to develop locally relevant solutions.

This training, organized by WIOMSA-SCALABLE in partnership with leading regional and international organizations, aims to provide participants with practical skills and insights needed to effectively collaborate for sustainable marine and coastal management.

What Participants Will Learn:
✔ Overcoming common barriers in collaborative processes
✔ Principles of systems thinking, co-management, and the importance of co-design
✔ Using tools and methods for co-design in real-world scenarios
✔ Facilitating inclusive decision-making processes
✔ Balancing power dynamics and integrating diverse knowledge systems
✔ Effective communication with varied stakeholders
✔ Building long-term impact and sustainability into project plans

Selection Criteria:
Participants will be chosen through a competitive selection process based on:

  1. Professional Relevance: Experience or active involvement in marine/coastal governance, conservation, community-based management, or policy work.

  2. Commitment to Co-Design: Clear motivation to apply co-design methods in current or upcoming projects.

  3. Potential for Impact: Ability to share knowledge and tools gained with peers or networks.

  4. Contribution to Training: Willingness to share case studies or real-world projects.

  5. Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English for group discussions and activities.

  6. Availability: Full commitment to attend the entire 5-day training.
