The Children and Youth Major Group (CYMG) to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has opened applications for its Global Steering Committee (GSC). This opportunity is designed for passionate and driven youth leaders who wish to engage in shaping global environmental policies and ensuring that young people have a seat at the table in international decision-making spaces.

Recognized globally as the official youth engagement mechanism to UNEP, CYMG brings together individuals and networks committed to addressing the triple planetary crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—through inclusive and participatory approaches to sustainable development.

 Role Overview

The Global Steering Committee acts as CYMG’s principal governance and coordination body. Its members—appointed as Thematic Focal Points (TFPs)—guide strategic priorities, represent youth voices in global forums, and collaborate with stakeholders across regions and sectors.

Each Thematic Focal Point will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating youth involvement in specific thematic or policy areas;
  • Liaising with UNEP departments and external partners;
  • Contributing to key initiatives, including the Youth Environment Assembly and UNEA-7;
  • Supporting grassroots engagement and capacity development efforts.

💼 Estimated Time Commitment: Approximately 3 hours per week (subject to variation based on tasks and timelines).

 Available Positions

CYMG is currently seeking qualified applicants for the following roles within the Steering Committee:

  • Environmental Health (1 seat)
    Focuses on integrating health-related themes into environmental action, including coordination on One Health initiatives, participation in global platforms, and contributing to UNEP health-related policy developments.
  • Policy Coordination (1 seat)
    Responsible for ensuring consistent policy input across CYMG Working Groups and maintaining engagement with the UNEP Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR).
  • Children’s Affairs (1 seat)
    Works to ensure that the voices and rights of children are effectively represented in environmental governance. Young individuals under the age of 18 are especially encouraged to apply for this role.
