Applications are open for the PROTEGO Marine Litter Hotspot Innovation Challenge, an initiative designed to support forward-thinking organizations working to tackle marine pollution in coastal areas of Ghana and Nigeria. Funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, and carried out by adelphi alongside its local partners—Plastic Punch, Ghana Cleaner Production Center, WASTE Africa, and the Nigeria Climate Innovation Center—this program seeks to accelerate meaningful action in addressing the problem of plastic waste along the Gulf of Guinea.

The initiative offers selected organizations both financial and technical support to bring their marine conservation ideas to life. With up to €40,000 in available funding, participating teams will also benefit from guidance by professionals with expertise in sustainable waste systems, ocean health, and circular economy practices. In addition to this support, the program opens the door to capacity building opportunities, training sessions, and visibility among global and local networks that care about ocean protection and innovation. Those chosen for the challenge will also be linked with stakeholders from government, industry, and civil society to amplify collaboration and impact.

Applicants should be officially registered entities operating in either Ghana or Nigeria. Suitable candidates may include non-profits, private enterprises, academic bodies, or grassroots organizations. At least one year of prior work in environmental conservation, waste management, or related fields is expected. Proposals must present a new or refined idea tailored to one of the identified problem zones and be grounded in a commitment to lasting social, environmental, and economic benefit. Projects that demonstrate clear pathways for sustainability after the program ends will be prioritized.
