The International Peace Institute (IPI) is currently inviting applications for two full-time, paid internship positions based in New York City:

Overview

The International Peace Institute is an independent, non-profit organization working to strengthen inclusive multilateralism for a more peaceful and sustainable planet. Through its research, convening, and strategic advising, IPI provides innovative recommendations for the United Nations System, member states, regional organizations, civil society, and the private sector. With staff from around the world and a broad range of academic fields, IPI has offices facing United Nations headquarters in New York.

🔹 Editorial Intern – Publications Team

IPI is looking for a motivated individual to join its Publications Team for a six-month, full-time internship starting in late July or early August 2025. The selected candidate will report to the Head of Publications and support the development of IPI’s research outputs, including policy papers, issue briefs, and articles published on the Global Observatory platform.

This position offers valuable experience in professional editing and publication production, along with exposure to key areas of IPI’s work such as peace operations, gender, climate security, and multilateralism.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Editing and proofreading policy documents and articles
  • Formatting citations and checking facts
  • Assisting with article outreach and interview preparation
  • Uploading content to WordPress and maintaining editorial consistency
  • Supporting content design, analytics, and outreach strategies
  • Conducting photo research and maintaining the in-house style guide
  • Assisting with literature reviews and research tasks
  • Carrying out administrative support as needed

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • BA or MA in international relations or a related field
  • Excellent editing and writing abilities
  • Strong attention to detail and familiarity with citation styles
  • Experience with proofreading or working in editorial roles
  • Knowledge of the UN system or international affairs a plus
  • Skills in WordPress, spreadsheets, or design software are an advantage
  • Proficiency in French and/or Chicago style is helpful

Terms:

  • Full-time (40 hours/week), paid at $16.50/hour
  • Hybrid work setup (virtual and in-person)
  • Applicants must have authorization to work in the U.S.

Short-listed candidates will complete an editing test, with interviews scheduled for mid-July. The internship is set to begin by the end of July or early August.

🔹 Intern – Brian Urquhart Center for Peace Operations (CPO)

IPI’s Brian Urquhart Center is also hiring a full-time intern to support its peace and security program for an initial three-month term, renewable for an additional three months. The role will begin in early September 2025.

This internship will involve working alongside the CPO research team to explore and contribute to issues such as conflict prevention, peacebuilding, UN reform, and mediation. Interns will also collaborate across departments and attend hybrid meetings and high-level discussions.

Core Duties:

  • Monitoring and analyzing developments in peace and security
  • Drafting briefings and analytical content on peace-related topics
  • Compiling literature reviews and research summaries
  • Assisting with logistical and content preparation for events
  • Supporting IPI’s digital content and communications
  • Performing general administrative tasks as required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in or recently completed graduate studies in political science, IR, or a related field
  • Solid understanding of UN processes and multilateral frameworks
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills in English
  • Proficiency in another official UN language is a plus
  • Strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and time management
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a diverse team

Terms:

  • Full-time (40 hours/week), compensated at $16.50/hour
  • Must be based in the New York area and authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Hybrid work environment (remote and in-office)
