Applications are now being accepted for the 2025/2026 Junior Fellowship Programme run by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS). This prestigious opportunity invites dedicated and ambitious young individuals from West Africa to engage in a transformative experience that nurtures leadership and policy-making skills. The programme focuses on equipping emerging talents with the tools they need to shape impactful careers in governance, security, and public policy.

With support from the Bosch Foundation, ISS has launched a flagship initiative dedicated to exploring the intersections of gender, geopolitics, and human security. The programme seeks to identify and develop outstanding young West Africans, with particular encouragement given to female applicants, to join the inaugural cohort of four fellows. This is more than just a training initiative — it is an immersive 10-month experience that places fellows at the heart of policy analysis and development in West Africa.

Based in Dakar, the selected fellows will work side-by-side with renowned African researchers to explore the region’s most pressing governance challenges. Through this collaborative environment, participants will engage with high-level policymakers and contribute to the formulation of strategic policy solutions. This fellowship also opens the door to a vast network of professionals and offers a springboard into various career paths within the fields of peace, security, and governance.

To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must be citizens of a West African nation and below the age of 30. A completed Master’s degree in fields such as political science, international studies, law, anthropology, sociology, or other closely related areas is required. Applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in themes such as human rights, democratic governance, security, and global affairs. Proficiency in either English or French is essential, while knowledge of local West African languages will be considered an asset. The programme also values individuals who are articulate, proactive, and eager to learn and contribute within a team-oriented setting.

Participants will receive a monthly stipend along with health insurance coverage. The fellowship also includes fully funded accommodation in Dakar and round-trip airfare from their home country. In addition, fellows will benefit from one-on-one mentorship with experienced ISS scholars and gain access to a dynamic and growing professional community committed to shaping Africa’s policy landscape.
