Applications are now being accepted for the DEGIS Buddy Program, Germany’s largest network dedicated to linking new international students with experienced peers. Designed especially for those beginning their studies in Germany, the program pairs newcomers with students who already know the ropes—whether they are German nationals or fellow internationals—helping them adapt more smoothly to their new environment.

Launched in the winter semester of 2020/2021, the initiative was created to bridge the gap between incoming students and those already familiar with life and study in Germany. Each new participant, known as an “Incoming Buddy,” is matched with a “Local Buddy,” someone ready to offer guidance, share experiences, and open doors to the local community. The program’s core aim is to provide meaningful support in those critical first steps, fostering connections, mutual assistance, and a stronger sense of belonging.

The process is simple. Registration takes place before each semester, allowing both new arrivals and local supporters to sign up. Once applications are reviewed, pairs are matched in groups to ensure a smooth introduction. From there, Local Buddies continue to assist their Incoming Buddies until the end of the semester, with DEGIS periodically checking in to ensure support remains consistent and effective.

For those offering their help as Local Buddies, it’s a chance to grow a wider circle of friends, join a countrywide network, strengthen leadership skills, and receive a formal certificate for their volunteer contribution. For newcomers, the experience offers a warm welcome during the first month, direct access to peers who have faced similar challenges, and the opportunity to quickly feel part of a supportive community.
