The Carboun Institute is inviting early-career climate and energy professionals to apply for a series of Research Associate roles supporting the organization’s expanding work across the Middle East and North Africa. As the region’s first independent climate and energy policy think tank, Carboun is dedicated to advancing evidence-driven solutions that strengthen decarbonization, resilience, and climate diplomacy.

Established in 2025 as a Dutch foundation, the Institute works at the front line of regional policy change, translating research into practical insights for governments, development partners, civil society, and the broader public. This call offers a chance for emerging researchers to join a mission-driven team shaping the future of climate policy in the MENA region.

About the Role

Research Associates will support a wide portfolio of analytical projects, ranging from critical minerals and green hydrogen to horizon scanning, policy monitoring, and long-term climate strategies. Working closely with program managers and research fellows, they will contribute to data analysis, research synthesis, policy briefs, visual content creation, and engagement with regional stakeholders.

This position is ideal for professionals with strong analytical skills, a commitment to rigorous research, and a genuine interest in the climate-energy landscape of the MENA region. All roles are fully remote, with flexible work arrangements and opportunities for occasional travel.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Analysis

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research across several climate and energy themes.

  • Compile background studies, literature reviews, and comparative policy assessments.

  • Build datasets and develop analytical visualizations for reports and presentations.

  • Track policy developments and emerging trends within the region and globally.

Policy Monitoring & Support

  • Review national and regional climate strategies, NDCs, and sectoral pathways.

  • Support assessments on climate resilience, adaptation, and regional diplomacy.

  • Analyze global processes influencing policy direction in the MENA region.

Writing & Publications

  • Contribute to briefs, commentaries, technical notes, and research papers.

  • Support editing, referencing, and quality checks for publication-ready work.

  • Develop engaging charts and infographics that communicate data clearly.

Engagement & Outreach

  • Assist with expert meetings, workshops, and public events.

  • Prepare presentations, talking points, and outreach materials.

  • Join meetings with policymakers and partners as part of project teams.

Project Coordination

  • Help manage timelines, deliverables, partner communication, and documentation.

  • Support proposal development and grant reporting.

  • Maintain organized research archives and datasets.

Working Conditions

  • One-year service contract, renewable.

  • Fully remote, open to applicants in the MENA region and nearby time zones.

Candidate Profile

Required

- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in climate studies, sustainability, public policy, economics, engineering, energy studies, or related fields.

- 2–3 years of experience in research, policy, or analysis (academic or professional).

- Strong analytical and writing skills, with experience handling data.

- Proficiency in data visualization tools (Excel, Power BI, Python, R, GIS, etc.).

- Demonstrated interest in climate action and the energy transition in the MENA region.

- Excellent communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail.

Preferred

- Arabic language skills.

- Experience working with climate or energy datasets.

- Familiarity with subjects such as hydrogen, critical minerals, industrial policy, or foresight.

- Prior experience in think tanks, NGOs, research institutions, or international organizations.

- Understanding of global climate governance processes (UNFCCC, COP, etc.).
