The fellowship provides full tuition coverage for the entire duration of the fellow’s programme at Harvard, enabling recipients to attend courses and engage fully in academic life without direct tuition costs. In addition to tuition support, the fellowship covers round-trip airfare between the fellow’s residence and Boston, USA, facilitating international travel without financial burden. Fellows (except those in certain executive education programmes) also receive a monthly stipend intended to help cover essential living expenses, including housing — typically in Harvard graduate dormitories — plus costs such as medical and dental insurance, food, books, winter clothing, and other basic needs. It’s important to note that the stipend may not fully cover all costs in the Boston/Cambridge area due to high living expenses, and fellows are personally responsible for all costs beyond tuition and airfare. 

To be eligible for the Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program, applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree or four-year equivalent and be capable of conducting spoken and written academic work in English at the level required by Harvard’s programmes. A key geographic eligibility criterion is that applicants must be citizens of South Africa or legal permanent residents of South Africa; priority will be given to those who are currently working in Africa and demonstrate a strong commitment to the public good and ethical leadership. Additionally, applicants are expected to have at least five years of postgraduate work experience, with priority extended to those whose careers and community engagement reflect a transformational impact.
