Program Benefits
The African Union Internship Program offers participants valuable professional experience within one of Africa’s most influential institutions. Interns gain practical skills, improve their understanding of policy processes, and build networks with professionals from across the continent and beyond. The internship allows participants to develop competencies in administration, research, communication, and project support depending on their assigned department. However, the internship is not financially remunerated. Selected interns are responsible for covering their own travel expenses, accommodation, medical insurance, and living costs during the internship period. While the AU may provide guidance on visa arrangements where necessary, it does not cover related expenses. Despite the lack of financial support, the professional exposure and experience gained can significantly strengthen an intern’s career prospects.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the African Union Internship Program, applicants must be nationals of an AU Member State and must either be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree program or in a graduate program (Master’s or equivalent), or have already obtained a relevant university degree. Candidates must be no older than 32 years at the time of selection and must demonstrate strong academic performance and commitment to Africa’s development agenda. Applicants are required to be proficient in at least one of the African Union’s working languages, which include Arabic, English, French, or Portuguese. In addition, candidates must have high ethical standards, integrity, and no record of serious criminal convictions. The program does not require prior professional work experience, making it particularly suitable for students and recent graduates seeking to gain continental-level exposure.
Eligible Countries
The African Union Internship Program is open to applicants who are nationals of Member States of the African Union. This means that candidates from all African Union member countries across Africa are eligible to apply. Applicants must hold citizenship of any recognized AU Member State at the time of application.
