Applications are open for the United Nations Chemicals and Waste Management Study Programme 2026, with up to eight fully funded scholarships available to young people, students, recent graduates and early-career professionals interested in chemicals and waste management, environmental health and related fields. The programme will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 9 to 13 November 2026, followed by additional youth engagement and networking opportunities connected to the Global Framework on Chemicals First International Conference (GFC IC-1) from 14 to 20 November 2026.

The opportunity is being offered by the Chemicals and Waste Youth Platform (CWYP) in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). Selected participants will gain an opportunity to learn directly from experts working within the United Nations system while developing their understanding of international environmental governance, chemicals management and waste-related processes.

The study programme will combine expert-led sessions, technical workshops, professional development activities and practical learning. Participants will also have opportunities to visit Geneva-based institutions, learn more about career pathways within the United Nations and take part in the Pollution Solutions Lab, where young participants will work together to develop practical ideas addressing challenges related to chemicals and waste management. Those who successfully complete the programme will receive a UNITAR Certificate of Completion.

The scholarships are intended for young people aged 18 to 35 years at the time of application. Applicants must come from a low- or middle-income country, least developed country, Small Island Developing State, or be a representative of Indigenous Peoples. They must also be able to travel to Geneva and remain available for the full period from 8 to 20 November 2026, including the study programme and associated activities.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a genuine interest in chemicals and waste management, environmental health or a closely related area. The selection team will particularly consider the applicant’s motivation, current activities or experience, future career aspirations and their plans to share knowledge gained through the programme with their communities, organizations or professional networks. Applications are expected to be personal and authentic, with applicants encouraged to explain their own experiences, interests and goals rather than relying on generic or copied responses.

The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support. Selected participants will receive economy-class return flights, hotel accommodation, coverage of the study programme fees, and reimbursement of eligible meals, visa fees and transportation expenses upon submission of the required receipts and in accordance with the organizers’ arrangements. The scholarship therefore offers young professionals and emerging environmental leaders an opportunity to participate in an international programme in Geneva without bearing the main costs of attendance.

The deadline for applications has been extended to 13 September 2026 at 23:59 UTC. Successful applicants are expected to be contacted by 19 September 2026. Individuals who applied for the July 2026 edition and remain available for the November programme can indicate this in the new application, allowing their previous application to be reconsidered without necessarily submitting an entirely new application.

Applications should be submitted through the official application form before the deadline. Selection for the scholarship does not automatically guarantee visa approval or registration for every associated event, as these remain subject to the relevant authorities and organizing institutions.
