About the MEXT Scholarship

Scholarship Duration
The scholarship duration depends on the programme selected:
- Master’s Degree: 2 years
- PhD Degree: 3 years
- Combined Master’s and Doctoral Programme: up to 3 years

Additional Information
Applicants are generally expected to:
- Hold citizenship of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
- Demonstrate strong academic performance.
- Have been born on or after 2 April 1991.
- Have completed, or be expected to complete, at least 16 years of education outside Japan before enrolment.
- Be able to undertake full-time study in Japan.
- Apply for a field related to their previous academic background.
- Hold an undergraduate degree when applying for a Master’s programme.
- Hold a Master’s degree when applying for a PhD programme.
- Meet the relevant academic and admission requirements of the university.
- Applicants whose previous education was conducted in English may submit an English proficiency certificate issued by their university where accepted under the application requirements.
