Applications are now open for the 2027 Indigenous Community Media Fund (ICMF), an initiative under Cultural Survival’s Community Media Program that supports Indigenous-led media organizations, collectives, and communication initiatives working to strengthen freedom of expression and access to information. The fund is designed to empower Indigenous communities by supporting projects that promote their cultures, languages, knowledge systems, rights, and connections to their ancestral lands through community-driven media.

The program provides funding to Indigenous organizations and media groups whose work helps raise community awareness, strengthen local organizing, and amplify Indigenous perspectives. For the 2027 funding round, Cultural Survival will give particular attention to initiatives that address environmental justice and climate change while promoting Indigenous-led solutions. Applications led by Indigenous women, young people, and members of Indigenous 2SLGBTQ+ communities are especially encouraged.

Eligible applicants include Indigenous community radio stations, networks of Indigenous community radio stations and media organizations, collectives of Indigenous communicators, Indigenous women communicators, youth communicators, and Indigenous 2SLGBTQ+ communicators. Indigenous muralists, photographers, and other Indigenous-managed media platforms are also eligible, including print publications, community television, audiovisual and multimedia producers, social media initiatives, intranet platforms, and community internet projects.

The call is open to applicants from selected countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and North America. Eligible African countries include Botswana, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. In Asia, applications are accepted from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Nepal. Eligible countries in Central and South America include Argentina, Bolivia, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, and Peru, while applicants from Canada, Mexico, and the United States are also eligible.

Projects may focus on improving access to Indigenous media, advocating for Indigenous communication rights, strengthening media infrastructure and technology, building communication and digital skills, producing and distributing media content, or promoting collaboration and knowledge exchange among Indigenous media networks. Applications will be assessed based on how well they respond to the priorities of Indigenous communities, the feasibility of the proposed activities, Indigenous leadership, meaningful participation of women, youth, and Indigenous 2SLGBTQ+ people, and their contribution to preserving Indigenous languages, knowledge, and communication systems.

Interested organizations and collectives must submit their proposals through Cultural Survival’s online application platform by creating an account or logging into an existing one, completing the application form for the 2027 Call for Proposals – Indigenous Community Media, and submitting all required information before the deadline.

The application deadline is August 9, 2026.
