FUNDED : Apply for the AERC–World Bank Visiting Scholars Programme 2026/2027

Applications are now open for the AERC–World Bank Visiting Scholars Programme 2026/2027, a collaborative initiative between the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and the World Bank Africa Region Chief Economist’s Office (AFRCE).

The programme provides an opportunity for selected African researchers to spend four to six months at the World Bank, where they will strengthen their research, collaborate with leading economists, and contribute to policy discussions on Africa’s economic development.

The programme aims to build the capacity of African researchers by providing access to world-class research resources, professional networks, and mentorship while promoting evidence-based economic policy across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Programme Objectives

The Visiting Scholars Programme seeks to:

  • Strengthen economic policy research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Expand collaboration between African researchers and World Bank economists.
  • Increase the policy impact of research on African development.
  • Enhance participants' research output, publications, and teaching materials.
  • Foster long-term academic and professional partnerships.

Programme Activities

During the placement, visiting scholars will:

  • Join the Office of the Chief Economist for Africa Region (DECAF).
  • Collaborate with World Bank researchers and economists.
  • Participate in seminars, research discussions, and capacity-building activities.
  • Revise and strengthen their research papers for submission to the World Bank Working Paper Series and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Deliver at least one seminar presenting their research findings.
  • Contribute to ongoing analytical and policy research within the Africa Region.
  • Access World Bank research resources, datasets, and professional networks.

Application Requirements

Interested applicants should submit:

  • A two-page statement of interest.
  • A draft research paper relevant to Africa's economic development.
  • Relevant course materials they wish to strengthen during the fellowship (for applicants involved in teaching).
  • An updated curriculum vitae (CV).

Eligible AERC researchers are encouraged to submit their expressions of interest before the deadline which is 6 September 2026 for the opportunity to participate in this prestigious research and policy programme.

Eligibility Criteria
- Be members of the AERC research network, including researchers enrolled in the AERC Collaborative PhD Programme (CPP).

- Have an active AERC research project that has reached at least the interim, post-fieldwork, or final paper stage.

- Be conducting research that aligns with the World Bank Africa Region's research priorities and Africa's development agenda.

- Women, as well as Francophone and Lusophone researchers, are especially encouraged to apply.
