PAID INTERNSHIP: Apply for the Afreximbank Group Internship Programme
The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) is inviting applications from eligible undergraduate and postgraduate students for its Internship Programme, which provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in international trade, finance, and African economic development. The programme is designed to help students understand the challenges affecting African trade, the role of trade finance, and the strategies used by Afreximbank to promote economic transformation across the continent.
Afreximbank is a pan-African multilateral financial institution mandated to finance and promote trade within and beyond Africa. Through this programme, selected students will gain exposure to the Bank’s operations, develop professional knowledge, and learn about the principles of trade finance, particularly structured trade finance. Interns will also have opportunities to contribute fresh perspectives and ideas to the organisation while learning from professionals working to strengthen African trade and economic integration.
The programme welcomes applicants who are nationals of Afreximbank member countries, students of African descent living in the diaspora, and non-African students who demonstrate a genuine commitment to Africa’s transformation. Selection is competitive and based on merit.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Afreximbank Group Internship Programme, applicants should be enrolled in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate studies at a recognised educational institution during the year of the internship. Preference is given to students pursuing degrees in economics, business administration, finance, accounting, social sciences, statistics, law, sciences, engineering, or related disciplines.
Applicants must be nationals of Afreximbank member countries, students of African descent in the diaspora, or non-African students whose commitment to Africa’s development aligns with the Bank’s mission. Candidates must be between 20 and 32 years old in the year they apply.
Applicants must be fluent in either English or French and possess a working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese is an additional advantage. Children of Afreximbank staff members are not eligible for the programme.
Internship Duration and Location
The internship lasts between three and six months, with placements generally organised around two annual intake periods, beginning in January and June. Applications are accepted throughout the year, although available positions are limited and selection depends on the Bank’s requirements.
Most placements take place at Afreximbank’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, although interns may be assigned to other locations within the Group. The programme is conducted in person, meaning successful applicants must be prepared to relocate to their assigned internship location.
Interns participate in the organisation’s induction process and are assigned to relevant departments, where they receive guidance from designated mentors. They may also rotate through different departments to gain broader exposure to the Bank’s activities and operations.
Programme Benefits
Successful applicants receive a monthly tax-free stipend of USD 1,000 to help cover living expenses. Interns relocating from their home countries also receive a monthly housing allowance of USD 500. The Bank provides reasonable return travel costs to the internship location in accordance with its travel policy, one week’s hotel accommodation with breakfast during the induction period, and transfers between the hotel and the relevant location upon arrival and departure. Where required, the Bank also facilitates the relevant residence visa for the internship period. Medical insurance is listed among the programme benefits, although successful candidates must also provide evidence of medical insurance and group personal accident cover valid in their internship location before commencing the placement.
Beyond financial support, participants gain practical exposure to the operations of a leading African financial institution, develop professional skills, learn about international trade and trade finance, and benefit from guidance provided by experienced professionals. The experience can help students build a stronger foundation for careers in finance, economics, international trade, development, and related fields.
Required Application Documents
Applicants must complete the official online application form and submit a letter of application, an updated curriculum vitae, a copy of a valid passport, and certified copies of relevant academic certificates. They must also provide a recommendation letter from their educational institution confirming the proposed internship period, which must not exceed six months.
Additionally, applicants are required to submit a statement of intent of no more than one A4 page explaining what they hope to gain from the programme. Candidates should ensure that their documents are complete and that the information provided in their application is accurate.
How to Apply
Interested and eligible candidates should submit their applications through the official Afreximbank internship application portal. Applicants are encouraged to review the eligibility requirements and prepare all the required documents before completing the online form.
The programme accepts applications throughout the year, and the official vacancy listing currently indicates an open-ended deadline. However, the Bank has a limited number of internship places, so applicants should apply as early as possible.
