The 7th African World Heritage Youth Forum, themed "Engaging African Youth in Climate Action for World Heritage Conservation," will consist of an online phase from October 23 to 28, 2023, followed by an in-person meeting in Cairo, Egypt, from November 20 to 24, 2023.
This forum aims to unite African youth leaders to share their insights, experiences, and solutions to address climate change challenges. By empowering youth to take a leading role in conservation and promoting cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration, it seeks to build a robust network of young leaders committed to Climate Action and the preservation of World Heritage sites for the well-being of present and future generations.
Event Dates: Online Phase - October 23-28, 2023 | In-Person Phase - November 20-24, 2023
Format: The forum will consist of three phases:
1. The first phase will be an online session focusing on the theoretical background of World Heritage conservation and Climate Action in Africa. Participants will develop proposals for climate heritage initiatives to enhance the conservation of African World Heritage sites.
2. During the second phase, participants will engage in practical activities, group discussions, and guided visits to a World Heritage site in Egypt (Historic Cairo). In this five-day gathering, participants will finalize and present their Climate Action projects during the official closing ceremony.
3. The third phase will involve follow-up activities related to project implementation, engaging various stakeholders and partners.
Selection Criteria:
- African citizenship, aged between 18 and 35 at the time of application
- Minimum of a post-secondary certified training and/or qualification
- Proficiency in English (as the working language of the Forum)
- Personal attributes: Motivated, active, and driven individuals interested in World Heritage and Climate Action, with a commitment to implementing forum outcomes in their home countries.
- Professional attributes: Active leaders or champions of Climate Action in Africa, involved in the conservation and promotion of Africa's heritage (both natural and cultural), and familiar with digital communication platforms such as social media, websites, video conferencing, etc.
- Emphasis on African regional representation and gender balance.
Language: English will be the primary working language, but participants are encouraged to overcome language barriers and interact in other official languages of the African Union (French, Portuguese, or Arabic) to promote regional integration.
