What Does the ILO Internship Program Entail?

The ILO's Internship Programme presents a diverse array of opportunities for high-caliber graduate and postgraduate students, as well as recent graduates. It offers a "hands-on" learning experience in fields aligned with the ILO's mandate and activities. The program's goal is to expose interns to the day-to-day operations of the ILO over a period of three to six months.

To qualify for an internship at the ILO, you should be enrolled in the final year of a graduate degree (Master's or equivalent) or be part of a higher degree program relevant to the ILO's mission. Alternatively, you should have completed such a program in the year preceding your application. Proficiency in at least one of the ILO's working languages (English, French, or Spanish) is required, along with the ability to adapt to an international, multicultural, and multilingual environment. There are no age restrictions for applicants.

The ILO initiates the Internship Roster, which is a call for applications, 2 to 3 times annually. Once the application period concludes, the profiles of eligible candidates are made accessible to departments seeking interns during a designated roster period. Consequently, internships can commence on the 1st or 15th of any month throughout the year.

Selection Procedure:
After an initial screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), the hiring departments will shortlist candidates. If there is a match between your profile and an internship opportunity, you will receive direct communication. If you do not receive contact from any department within six months of your application, you can assume that you have not been selected for any department during this roster. If you remain eligible, you are welcome to apply for the next roster.

If you are shortlisted, the hiring department may contact you for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use various communication technologies, such as Skype, video conferences, email, etc., for candidate assessment and evaluation.

Stipend:
During your internship in Geneva, you will receive a monthly stipend of 2450 CHF from the ILO, unless you already have funding from another institution (e.g., your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, the ILO will cover the remaining amount to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. You will be responsible for your travel expenses to Geneva.

Insurance:
Please be aware that the ILO does not assume responsibility for costs associated with accidents or illness that may occur during the internship. It is your responsibility to secure insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of your internship at the assigned duty station, whether it's in Geneva or in the field.
