For a restricted number of strategic initiatives, SwedBio is accepting concept note submissions via its "Collaborative Partner Implementation Pathway."

The Sustainable Development Programme of SwedBio centres on five main themes: Climate change & ecosystems, Livelihood, food & health, Cities & biodiversity, Biocultural diversity, and Values & governance. Agroecology is a movement that seeks to shift food systems towards ones that are more diverse, equitable, and sustainable. It focuses on smallholder farmers regaining their rights to resources and expertise. Urban Nature is centred on integrating ecosystem services into urban planning and promoting awareness and application of pertinent nature-based solutions in urban settings. SwedBio works to enhance biological and cultural diversity and the connections between it and local community organisations by partnering with indigenous peoples.

The necessity of biodiversity and ecosystem services for both reducing and adapting to climate change is highlighted by climate change. The Climate Change subject of SwedBio enhances fair ecosystem governance and management that promotes climate change adaptation, mitigation, and disaster risk reduction in addition to sustainable livelihoods. In order to comprehend and acknowledge the necessity of nature-based solutions, such as ecosystem-based methods to adaptation and disaster risk reduction, SwedBio brings together a variety of actors.

Small-scale fisheries aims to uplift small-scale fishers/farmers, fishworkers, and those engaged in the value chain through the sustainable and equitable governance and management of social-ecological aquatic systems. By enhancing their voices, involvement, and understanding of their tenure rights, our initiative guarantees food security and resilient, sustainable livelihoods.

In summary, by concentrating on these five areas, SwedBio's Sustainable Development Programme seeks to address the issues of poverty, social exclusion, and low participation in decision-making processes.

SwedBio's operations are guided by cross-cutting principles such as resilience, poverty alleviation, equity, human rights, democracy, gender, and endogenous development. The company focuses on advancing equality for women and men in sustainable and equitable development, biodiversity management, and ecosystem services. SwedBio's policy on integrating conflict perspectives aims to understand the relationship between biodiversity, climate, and conflict.

The company has developed a Conflict Policy to guide its work. SwedBio also includes an equity, democracy, and rights perspective in all its activities, emphasizing a human rights-based approach (HRBA) Policy. This framework analyzes power structures and empowers people to demand their rights and the responsibility of states, institutions, and non-state actors. SwedBio's adaptive approach allows them to change operations based on learning and evolving contexts, ensuring they navigate complex spaces and mitigate risks. A clear framework and transparent principles guide knowledge collaborations across knowledge systems and cultures.

Additional Information

Program Type
Fully Funded
Program Benefits
With minor grants (total funding up to maximum SEK 500,000), SwedBio supports both shorter studies and longer, multi-year programmes. It is recommended that multi-year programmes look for additional co-funding from other sources.
Eligibility Criteria
Initiatives that support SwedBio's goal of a just and sustainable world are funded. Applications must be made for projects that align with the concepts, philosophies, and methodologies of SwedBio. SwedBio provides support to international organisations, universities, and civil society organisations, especially to regional and global networks that are working on initiatives that are relevant to both the region and the world. Low-income and least developed nations, middle-income nations, and south-south cooperation are prioritised. SwedBio only supports work with regional and worldwide significance; it does not assist individuals, groups, or projects with a national focus. Organisations need to be capable of managing themselves and have a suitable organisational structure. Initiatives that don't get much assistance from other Swedish sources are given priority.
